It is not easy to single out one or even a few most characteristic features of such a complex educational institution as the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy (NaUKMA). First of all, we are a Ukrainian university. For a post-colonial country like Ukraine the fact that a truly Ukrainian and really independent university has been created is very important. Kyiv-Mohyla Academy’s mission is to rear the national elite, and in doing so we seek to guarantee the intellectual and cultural independence of the state and to maintain the national identity. During the period of its greatest prosperity in the 17-18th centuries, Kyiv-Mohyla was a powerful symbol of academic excellence and national pride. Today we strive to make the modern Academy the intellectual symbol of Ukraine in modern times. Secondly, we are an innovative university. Mohylianka, as our university is often called, exerts great influence on the state and society through its higher education reform efforts aimed at introducing the standards of the European Higher Education Area (the result of the Bologna Process) to Ukraine. Without any exaggeration, we can affirm, that all innovative (even more – revolutionary) changes that occur in Ukrainian higher education were initiated by Mohylianka. We are open to cooperation. We are introducing the quality standards of the best European and American universities into Ukrainian educational practice. NaUKMA professors lecture at foreign universities and we welcome international faculty into our academic community. And our aim is to incorporate Ukrainian university research, and the Ukrainian educational tradition into the European context on an equal footing. Finally, we are expanding faster than any other university. Since the revival of Mohylianka in 1992, only 17 years have passed. This has been sufficient for NaUKMA to become one of the most prestigious universities in Ukraine; its diplomas are recognized all over the world. Kyiv-Mohyla Academy is Ukraine’s most successful national project, and is testament to the aspiration of the Ukrainian nation to become a “Knowledge Society”. All of the above explains why we are the most ambitious university in Ukraine. Our task is to join the circle of the best global universities. Ukraine deserves to be home to one of the world’s best universities! And I am firmly convinced that NaUKMA is destined to become such an institution.
