World Health OrganizationWorld Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for Europe. We work in a Region made up of 53 countries, with over 880 million people, that stretches from the Atlantic to the Pacific. The sheer size of the Region means an incredible diversity of people and health situations, but we at the Regional Office share a common goal: ensuring that the Region’s citizens enjoy better health. The WHO Country Office, Ukraine opened in 1994. It has 24 staff, including 4 international professionals and 8 national officers, who provide technical support and advice to the Ministry of Health on major programmes on health issues such as: health policy, the health system, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, mental health, vaccine-preventable diseases and child and adolescent health. The Head of the Country Office is Dr Igor Pokanevych. Our challenge is to help Member States do their best to improve the health of their populations. This means providing the best possible response to their populations’ ever-changing health needs. No matter the health problem – HIV/AIDS, multidrug-resistant tuberculosis, influenza, rising levels of obesity or alcohol consumption, natural disasters or environmental degradation – we can only help if we and our Member States all take bold, coordinated action. Clearly, only the systematic strengthening of integrated health systems can achieve real and sustainable improvements in health. That is why the Regional Office’s new role is to help its Member States develop and implement strategies to strengthen their health systems.
